Today’s “Pay Forward” gift is - What’s Compassion. "You may call God love. You may call God goodness. But the best name for God is compassion" (Psalms 23:6). I was told that the problem I am having, would cause me to have compassion for others. Two people I share the Program with, went back out, to try a little control drinking and drugs. They’ve become what I call drifters, in and out of sobriety. I feel sad that they are unable to stay stopped, and I fear for their life. I had that drifting problem before A.A., and I can remember the frustration and powerlessness, with no way out. In A.A. I have come to believe compassion is empathy; an understanding that comes from experience. I do have a deep awareness of the suffering of others, coupled with the wish to relieve it, but feeling powerless to do so, healing is our Father’s business. I believed for a long time if someone came to me for help, I should take care of them. Sometimes I could to be helpful, other times it was beyond my “pay-grade.” I am willing to share my experience, strength and hope, but I am not the healer, that is our Father doing for us what we cannot. My self-concern is that my life will be meaningless, useless, and non-effective, as it once was. I am reminded that we are to carry the message, not the alcoholic. Thy Love, Thy Will be done.
